Should You Do Your Own Kitchen Remodeling?

Are you a homeowner? More importantly, are you a homeowner who would like to have your kitchen remodeled? Whether you are looking for a change or looking to redo a poor quality kitchen, you may seriously be thinking about kitchen remodeling. Once you have officially decided that you would like to have your kitchen remodeled, you will need to decide how that remodeling will occur. When it comes to kitchen remodeling, you can remodel your own kitchen or hire a professional to do it for you.

With kitchen remodeling, one of the most popular remodeling methods is self remodeling. Self remodeling is when a homeowner decides to do their own remodeling themselves, without professional assistance. If you are tying to decide whether or not you should do you own kitchen remodeling, it may be a good idea to examine the advantages and disadvantages of doing so. You will find that there are a number of advantages to doing your own kitchen remodeling, but you will also find that there are a number of disadvantages as well.

One of the most common reasons why homeowners choose to do their own kitchen remodeling is because of the cost. When it comes to hiring a professional contractor, the cost will vary, but it is sometimes quite high. That cost often does not include the cost of supplies and materials; however, if it does you will easily be able to notice because the overall cost will be high. If you are able perform your own kitchen remodeling repairs, you may be able to save yourself a fairly large amount of money. One of the reasons for that is the fact that you only have to pay for your supplies and materials. If you are looking for a low-cost way to remodel your kitchen, self remodeling may be the way to go.

In addition to saving money, self remodeling is also preferred by homeowners because it enables them repair or remodel their kitchen anyway that they see fit. If you hire a professional contractor to remodel your kitchen for you, they will be using your ideas and suggestions; however, last minute changes are sometimes frowned upon and they may even cost you money. If you are doing your own kitchen remodeling, you will not have this problem. You can change your mind about any aspect of your remodeling project at anytime, rarely with any consequences.

As previously mentioned, there are a number of advantages and disadvantages to doing your own kitchen repairs. Although it is nice to save money and be able to have complete control over your kitchen remodeling project, you will find that it often takes a lot of time to do your own kitchen remodeling. Professional contractors are not only good at what they do, but they are also experienced. That is one of the reasons why they are able to complete most of their jobs in no time at all. If you do not have any home improvement or remodeling experience, the job could take you twice as long, if not longer, to complete. If you are limited on the amount of time that you have available or if you have a deadline, you may find it difficult or impossible to do your own kitchen repairs.

In addition to the time it takes, when deciding whether or not you should do your own remodeling, it is important to consider the damage that can be done. It is no secret that it isn’t always easy to remodel anything, let alone a kitchen. The difficultly will all depend on which areas of your kitchen you plan on remodeling. If you do not have home improvement or remodeling experience, you need to be careful with how you approach the situation. A quality remodeling project is likely to increase the value of your home, but a poor one may reduce the value of it. That is something many homeowners do not realize or even think about it.

As you can see, there are a number of advantages and disadvantages to doing your own kitchen remodeling. In addition to the above mentioned factors, it is also important to take the size of your project into consideration. If you are only doing a small project, such as replacing your kitchen sink, it may be a good idea to take the time to familiarize yourself with the process instead of automatically making the decision to pay a professional.

We are remodeling our kitchen and I need your opinion.Should we get rid of our back door?
We are in need of more cabinet space in our some what small kitchen. We are gonna knock out one wall and open the kitchen to what will be a family room. We will also turn a 5.5 foot wide window, in the family room, into a patio door that will lead out to a soon to be deck.

We have a kitchen door that is now 3.5 feet adjacent to where said patio door will be in 6 months. We have been getting different opinions on our kitchen back door. some people say yeah remove it for more cabinets. Some say no keep if for emergency exit.

My question is if we should keep the door even though we will have another set of doors 3.5 feet away in the family room on the same wall. what do you think.

Please try to explain your answer. your opinion will help me decide.

    Thanks.

I think get rid of the door, you will still have your patio doors like you say. A friend of mine has done the same thing.

if both doors are in same room then i say get rid of the back door, however if you have to go into another room to get to the patio doors you may find its against fire regulations because by law you need an escape route from the kitchen

It’s kinda hard to tell without pictures, but I would think you could take the kit. door out since you will have the slider right there. What emergency could keep you from going through the sliding door?? Good Luck

Get some graph paper, and map it out to some scale like 1ft = 4squares. Make some scale cut-outs of the fridge, stove, etc and play around with the design until it looks right.

Don’t keep it. There are doors right next to it. They will just take up room. Put something nice in its place like a painting. Or a family picture so you can always remember your family and think about how they loved you and you loved them all the time.

If your going to have a patio door that close you should patch in the door, It is just not necessary. Your kitchen will look a little strange with two doors so close to each other.

Instead of getting rid of the door why don’t you add french doors. It normally adds style and grace to any home. Cabinets are great in a house, but adding french doors brings in alot of light and who wants a dark kitchen, also if you ever decide to sell it just adds that certain something.

Get rid of the door. You dont need 2 emergency exits so close to each other.

Can you leave the door for now, purchase the cabinets necessary to go in that space, and install them when you add the family room? This would allow you to keep the door for safety’s sake now but close it off for additional space later. I don’t know how your countertops and such will be laid out, so I don’t know if this is truly a possibility.

In any case, I’d go for the long term solution and close the door off if building codes allow it.

I have seen many places that their patio doors was their back door. So If you need that space for more cabinets then do it. I bet it will look nice when you are all finish. good luck.

Get rid of it! Like you say you have another door 3.5 feet away. I wouldn’t worry about the emergency exit with the other door so close. Plus, I know the small kitchen syndrome all to well. You can never have enough cabinets.
If you are really concerned about it as an emergency exit call you local fire department. They will usually offer advice for free on scuh matters.

You will have to check your local building codes. Most municipal codes require two exits on the first level. I have not seen any codes that are so specific they state exactly where the doors have to be.

You always need the back door but you are putting in the patio door so two may be overkill! If you can gain cabinet room then do it…you can never have enough cabinets!

I guess the question would ask is: Is there anything in the 3.5 feet that would inhibit someones exit. If not I would say don’t worry about it.

Once that is settled; what will the wall look like? Have you give any thought to the aesthetics of just putting in cabinets?

I’m wondering if you could have the best of both worlds if you put a penensula in the area where the wall was removed. This might give you a nice serving area to the dining room and the extra cabinet space. Even the door might look better in such an arragement.

If you are going to have another door 3 feet away, by all means, take it out and make wall/cabinet space.
We moved an interior door over 4 feet in our kitchen- and it made such a huge difference in the room- gave us more cabinet space and we were able to build an island in the center.
As long as you have the safety egress covered, you can be creative with the space.
Have you talked to an architect? It might help you a lot in terms of load-bearing and logistics. Sure it’s an expense but well-worth it in the long run.
Good luck with the renovation- kitchen renovations are the toughest! Buy lots of paper plates, get a hot-plate and prepare to have dishes in the tub!:)
